Medellín's reputation as the "City of Eternal Spring" is largely justified, average temperatures hover between 22–28°C year-round, the city sits at 1,495 meters above sea level, and dramatic temperature extremes are essentially unknown. But there are meaningful differences between months, and choosing your dates wisely can significantly affect your experience.

Understanding Medellín's Climate

Medellín has two dry seasons and two rainy seasons per year, driven by the Intertropical Convergence Zone moving north and south.

Dry Season 1 (Peak): December – February. Low rainfall, abundant sunshine, warm days.
Rainy Season 1: March – May. Increasing afternoon rains. Still very pleasant.
Dry Season 2 (Best): June – August. The finest weather of the year. Clear skies, moderate temperatures, lush landscapes from the recent rains.
Rainy Season 2: September – November. Heaviest rains. Still manageable for most travelers.

Best Months to Visit: June, July, August

The June–August dry season offers Medellín's finest conditions. August is particularly special because it combines perfect weather with the Feria de las Flores, Colombia's most famous flower festival, drawing millions of visitors annually. If you can only visit once, visit in August.

June and July offer similarly excellent weather without the festival crowds of August. Hotel prices are moderate. Guatapé and outdoor activities are at their best.

December: The Christmas Light Festival

December is Medellín's most atmospheric month. The Alumbrado, one of the world's most spectacular Christmas light displays, transforms the city from December 8 through January 15. The Río Medellín corridor between Las Vegas and Industriales glows with millions of synchronized lights nightly.

Caveat: December is the city's peak tourist month. Hotels book out weeks in advance, prices increase 30–50%, and popular areas can feel overcrowded on weekends.

January and February: Good Weather, Lower Crowds

After the Christmas peak, January settles into a pleasant rhythm. Weather remains dry and sunny. Many domestic tourists return to work and school. Hotel prices drop. This is an underrated window for visiting, the conditions are excellent and the city feels more local.

February maintains similar conditions. The only consideration is Carnaval de Barranquilla (on the coast) which can draw some domestic travelers away from Medellín.

March, April, May: Shoulder Season Value

Rains increase from March, typically arriving as afternoon showers rather than all-day downpours. Mornings are usually clear, afternoons bring 1–2 hours of rain, evenings clear again. Most tours run without issue, just plan outdoor activities for mornings.

April Highlight: Semana Santa (Holy Week) is one of the most culturally rich weeks in Colombia. Book accommodation 4–6 weeks ahead.

Value travelers find March–May excellent: prices are 20–30% below December peak, crowds are manageable, and the post-rain vegetation makes the hills and countryside intensely green.

September, October, November: Rainy Season

These months see the heaviest rainfall of the year, particularly October, which can bring extended periods of grey skies and afternoon storms. It is still very manageable for most travelers (this is not monsoon-level rain), but outdoor activities can be disrupted.

If traveling in these months: embrace the indoor culture (museums, food halls, coffee shops), plan outdoor activities for morning windows, and expect occasional tour cancellations.
