We recommend only tours led by guides who have a personal connection to the history, ideally former residents of neighborhoods affected by the violence. The best tours visit La Catedral (his custom prison), the Monaco building (recently demolished by the city as a symbolic act), and end with a conversation about the city Medellín has become.
