Or send it on WhatsAppMedellín's Christmas lighting is produced by EPM and has run every year since 1967. It is the single best reason to be in the city in December, and the schedule is fixed enough to plan a trip around.
Día de las Velitas. Candles on every doorstep, the full display goes live at dusk and the city stays out all night. The biggest night of the season.
Lights are on nightly. After January 6 some secondary installations come down, and the river corridor stays lit to the end.
Our 6:30 PM pickup puts you on the river corridor as the sky finishes darkening, the best window for photographs.
The alumbrados spread across the whole valley. Knowing which stretches are worth your evening is what your guide is for.
The main event. Themed arches, sculptural installations and synchronized lighting along both riverbanks between Las Vegas and Industriales. Walk a stretch of the promenade, ride the rest with your driver alongside.
A replica Antioquian village on a hilltop, decorated for Christmas, with a 360° view of the whole lit valley below. This is the photograph people come back with. Craft shops, coffee and snacks on the plaza.
The southern municipalities run their own displays around the main parks. Smaller, denser, far more local in feel. Worth adding if you want the neighbourhood Christmas as well as the civic one.
Outside the official alumbrados, the hillside at night is its own spectacle and it sits on the way back from the river. Adds roughly 45 minutes.
A December night in Medellín, side by side.
Beautiful tour with plenty of opportunities for photos. The lights along the river were amazing, and Pueblito Paisa looked so charming decorated for Christmas. Highly recommend visiting during the holiday season.
Las decoraciones son mucho más bonitas de lo que imaginaba. El recorrido fue muy cómodo y tener transporte privado hizo toda la diferencia. Muy recomendado para familias y parejas.
I've visited Christmas markets in Europe, but Medellín's Christmas lights were something completely different. The atmosphere was magical, and the guide made the experience even more enjoyable by explaining the history behind the decorations.
Si visitas Medellín en Navidad, este tour es obligatorio. Todo estuvo muy bien organizado y el guía nos contó muchas historias sobre las tradiciones navideñas de la ciudad. Lo disfrutamos muchísimo.
The Alumbrados are switched on the night of December 7, 2026 (Día de las Velitas) and stay lit through January 11, 2027. Lights come on around 6:00 PM and run until roughly midnight.

Medellín evenings in December sit around 63 to 66 °F and Cerro Nutibara is breezy. Bring a light jacket and comfortable walking shoes. There is walking on the river promenade and around Pueblito Paisa.
You can. December traffic on the river corridor is heavy and parking near the displays is limited, so a private vehicle with a driver waiting for you is the main practical difference.
